While I have enjoyed each year going to an elementary school and reading to the students with the help of my muppet, I can also say that Math Day is also another day I enjoy. It is filled with fun and great competition. Elementary students begin practicing for this work when school begins. It comes in the spring with great competitiveness between each school and students individually. The students show up early on a Saturday morning and it ends just after lunch. Each school even creates a theme for each of their individual school’s t-shirts. These are very creative and quite competitive in themselves. I often think back to the NASA space program and how important math was to our orbiting the moon on Apollo 13 and then returning home. I would often question if any of our students had that capability and knowledge today. Upon seeing this competition and the students’ hard work, I can say the answer is yes!
